Location: A313-314 GWCC - Project SAVE is a Camden County, New Jersey, innovative substance use program generated with the municipal courts, police departments, the county’s health department, and a New Jersey Licensed Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment provider. The program entails the strategic placement of a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) inside the municipal courtroom to offer voluntary direct accessibility to treatment services to nonviolent defendants facing substance use-related charges. If accepted, the CADC, known as the SAVE Advocate, acts as a personal case manager and court liaison-bridging the gap between the courts, enrolled participant, and treatment services.

Since its countywide launch, Project SAVE has proven to be an influential early intervention, producing results inside and outside of the courtroom. From 2019 until 2023, 9,981 referrals were submitted by local police, court staff, and self-referred defendants. Of those referred, SAVE Advocates were able to greet 55% in court, enroll 3,269 in Project SAVE, link them to 3,206 treatment admissions, confirm 32% completed treatment and 49% were still engaged in treatment (includes medication-assisted treatment), and document 60,940 outreaches made on behalf of all referrals.

This session will provide multi-sector stakeholders with an overview of Project SAVE, how lessons learned correlated to effective strategy execution to produce results, and how approaches can be tailored to coordinate, sustain, or enhance measures for existing overdose interventions at the local, state, and/ or federal level. Additionally, the audience will hear directly from a Project SAVE participant, and how her interaction with the program has forever changed her life.
