April Hoge has worked with Health Services R&D at the Birmingham VA Health Care System since 2017. During her time at the VA, her work has focused on understanding and improving health care for Veterans who are homeless-experienced. Most notably, she led the development, testing, and evaluation of a tool, named the HOGE, to assess aspects of service delivery in VA’s Homeless Patient-Aligned Care Teams. April led a local team of clinicians as part of a national quality-improvement project to implement evidence-based practices for opioid-related care. April’s work with the VA has involved health services research; survey development, administration, and validation; project management; implementation science; and dissemination of findings to research/clinical communities. Her current work is with the project, "Clinical Context of Suicide Following Opioid Transitions in Veterans", in which she is interviewing individuals who lost a loved one to suicide after a prescription opioid reduction or stoppage.
