Elizabeth Adams

Dr. Elizabeth Troutman Adams is a health communication researcher who studies and develops public awareness campaigns designed to prevent substance misuse and disorder. She has a special interest in understanding the formulation of addiction narratives as told by families affected by a member's substance use disorder. Prior to her research career, Dr. Adams worked as a public relations specialist for a medical system serving populations and communities highly affected by the overdose epidemic. Dr. Adams received her master's degree in health communication from the University of Kentucky and her doctorate from the Hussman School of Media and Journalism of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her expertise in strategic health communication and scientific translation has been applied in a variety of federally funded initiatives responding to the overdose crisis. She serves as the Dissemination Lead for three Helping to End Addiction Long-Term projects, including the HEAL Prevention Cooperative, the HEALing Communities Study, and the HEAL Harm Reduction Research Network.
