9:10 AM - 10:10 AM
This session will provide a case-based exploration of various reconstruction scenarios, including cancer resection, osteomyelitis, diabetic foot wounds, trauma, and aging-related conditions. Traditionally, microsurgery has been the main surgical weapon in addressing these complex challenges, effectively resurfacing and restoring a wide range of defects and wounds. However, we are now witnessing the emergence of tissue engineering as a formidable new approach that holds the potential to revolutionize patient care. Drawing on Toynbee’s concept of “challenge and response,” this session will examine how tissue engineering is rising to challenge the established dominance of microsurgery, offering new possibilities for the future of reconstructive surgery.
