Juan R. Mella-Catinchi, MD MPH is assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. Mella-Catinchi received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed a General Surgery residency at Boston University, where he served as part of the trauma surgery team during the Boston Marathon bombing tragedy and was elected Administrative Chief Resident in his final year of training. He then went on to complete his Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training at the Lahey Clinic before continuing his postdoctoral training with a fellowship in Reconstructive Microsurgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Mella-Catinchi is double board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. With a clinical interest in breast reconstruction including implant based as well as autologous reconstruction, surgical management of lymphedema, and complex reconstruction, he applies advanced surgical principles to improve his patient’s quality of life by restoring function and form. He is the recipient of the Owen H. Wangensteen Excellence in Research Award at the 99th Annual American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress during a T32 NIH research fellowship. He has also been invited to present his research at several conferences across the country and authored numerous peer-reviewed articles.
