Safety, Stabilization, and Empowerment: Psychiatric Care for Women Experiencing Sexual and Domestic Violence

Sexual and domestic violence are common yet frequently underrecognized contributors to psychiatric illness in women. This session will provide practical strategies for identifying trauma exposure in routine psychiatric encounters, even when patients do not disclose abuse directly. Faculty will review trauma-informed interviewing techniques, red flags for ongoing risk, and approaches to assessing safety without retraumatization. Clinical cases will illustrate how early recognition of violence-related trauma can guide diagnosis, treatment planning, and referral, improving outcomes across mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders.

Session developed in partnership with the International Society of Reproductive Psychiatry (ISRP).
