Black Women's Mental Health Institute

Dr. Nadia Monique Johnson is the Founder and CEO of the Black Women's Mental Health Institute, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to building awareness of and support for the mental and holistic wellbeing of Black women and girls. The BWMHI statewide community counseling program is open to all Alabama residents and has provided thousands of hours of free counseling throughout the entire state. This is immensely important because Alabama has consistently ranked 50th in the Mental Health America Access to Care Report. The BWMHI also hosts community health forums, partners with universities to train future mental health clinicians, and facilitates educational workshops in mental health and suicide prevention. BWMHI has received national and local awards for their efforts. Due to the success of their statewide free counseling program, BWMHI received bipartisan support from Representative Laura Hall and Representative Rex Reynolds, resulting in the organization being written into the Alabama state budget through a legislative allocation.

Dr. Johnson is a professor, advocate and trainer. She has spoken at several national events including South by Southwest, State of Black Health Conference, Bronze Lens Film Festival and a Congressional briefing by invitation of Congresswoman Robin Kelly. She has also been quoted, interviewed and featured by Essence, the American Medical Association, Teen Vogue and MSNBC. Most recently, Dr. Johnson was invited to the Power, Innovation and Leadership program; a women’s leadership program hosted by the Harvard Kennedy School.
