Peripheral artery disease (PAD) afflicts more than 12 million Americans, and the prevalence is increasing in the context of a growing burden of metabolic disease and an aging population. Patients who suffer both PAD and diabetes mellitus have higher rates of amputation, foot infections, and small vessel disease. Care for this population is complex and requires comprehensive assessment, intensive medical therapy, and is optimized through a multidisciplinary approach. This Scientific Statement provides an overview and framework to enable all members of the care team to care for the growing population of patients with PAD and diabetes.
