Postpartum Psychosis, Infanticide and Legal Considerations

In this presentation, faculty will draw upon their clinical, academic, and advocacy experience to examine the complex intersection of postpartum psychosis, maternal–infant violence, and the law. Through clinical and forensic cases, they will explore the challenges clinicians face in recognizing severe postpartum psychiatric illness, assessing risk, distinguishing psychiatric symptoms from questions of intent and responsibility, and communicating effectively when cases enter the legal system. The presentation will highlight areas where current psychiatric terminology, clinical frameworks, and legal standards may not adequately capture the unique features of postpartum psychiatric illness, while providing practical guidance for clinicians caring for patients at risk.
