Tory Eisenlohr-Moul

Dr. Eisenlohr-Moul is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She is a licensed clinical psychologist with specialized fellowship training in the pathophysiology, assessment, and treatment of hormone-related psychiatric disorders, particularly premenstrual disorders.

As a scientist, she works primarily with mechanistic randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and longitudinal observational studies to clarify how ovarian steroids alter transdiagnostic RDoC constructs and related phenotypes, particularly suicidality and alcohol use, in susceptible females. Her NIMH-funded career-development and R01 trials established the effects of natural changes in neuroactive steroids, versus exogenous steroid stabilization, on mechanisms of proximal suicide risk during the perimenstrual weeks of the menstrual cycle. Building on this work, she is now Principal Investigator of a new NIMH-funded trial (R01MH140472) using pharmacologic fMRI to understand the shared and person-specific neural mechanisms by which estradiol stabilization reduces cyclical suicidality. She was previously awarded a NARSAD Young Investigator Grant to evaluate the role of the immune system in these effects.

She currently collaborates on NIH-funded grants examining the role of the menstrual cycle in ADHD and cognition, harmful alcohol use, and menstrual cycle exacerbation of psychopathology more broadly. She currently serves as Sponsor on three NIH F30 fellowships supporting her trainees' independent research on cyclic effects on suicidality, cannabis use, and sleep. She is passionate about training and empowering others to conduct rigorous scientific work on the menstrual cycle and mental health.

Suicide Risk Reconsidered: Brain, Biology, and Digital Influence Factors Every Psychiatrist Should Know

Contemporary suicide risk is shaped by factors that extend beyond symptoms alone. This rapid-fire session will address three evolving contributors to suicidal thoughts and behaviors: brain-based functionality identified through neuroscience research; hormonal influences on mood, cognition, and behavior across the lifespan; and the growing presence of AI chatbots in patients’ mental health decision-making. Faculty will provide practical guidance on identifying these contributors to suicide, incorporating targeted screening into assessments, and adapting treatment plans accordingly. Clinical examples will highlight how integrating biological and digital awareness can strengthen suicide prevention efforts.<br><br>Session developed in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Steven Chan is a triple board-certified clinical informaticist, psychiatrist, and addiction medicine physician. He serves as Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and Immediate Past Chair of the Committee on Innovation at the American Psychiatric Association. Steven’s research and ideas have been featured in publications such as JAMA, Telemedicine and e-Health, JMIR, and Wired, and media appearances on PBS and NPR. He is a sought-after national speaker, having presented at Fortune 50 companies like Google headquarters.

He serves as Co-Director of Frontier Technology Lab in Stanford Engineering. At Stanford Psychiatry TechHub, he serves on the Leadership Committee. He additionally volunteers on the Board of Directors at Mental Health America.

In addition to his academic and clinical roles, Steven is the Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of AsyncHealth, a University of California-backed digital mental health AI agent startup supported by Berkeley SkyDeck PAD-13 and the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps (NSF i-Corps). Steven’s contributions to the field of digital mental health have made him a respected figure in both academic and industry circles.

Matthew Hoptman

Dr. Hoptman is a research scientist at Nathan Kline Institute and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center. He received his PhD in Biopsychology in 1991 from the University of Chicago. He has been working at NKI since 1994 and has had a faculty appointment at NYU Medical Center since that time. His research focus is on impulsivity, aggression, and suicidality in schizophrenia as relates to brain functional and structural connectivity, and he is interested in integrating imaging methods, including MRI, EEG, and neuromodulation. He is a charter member of the Association for Psychological Science and is a member of the Society of Biological Psychiatry, Society for Research in Psychopathology, and the Society for Neuroscience. He has served on numerous NIH grant review panels and has been funded by NIH, NARSAD, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, including a current NIMH R01 grant on emotional impulsivity and suicidal ideation and behavior in schizophrenia and depression. He has also served as guest editor on two special issues for Frontiers in Psychiatry.
