The Trump Administration’s upcoming National Drug Control Strategy provides the roadmap for the Nation’s effort to target the sources and methods of drug distribution, and fortify our communities here at home by preventing drug use before it starts and assisting those fighting to reclaim their lives by providing the treatment, recovery support, and other services they need. The Administration’s approach begins by promoting the social norm of a drug-free America, highlighting that 83% of Americans do not use drugs. Preventing substance use before it begins is one of the most effective ways to protect public health, strengthen communities, and reduce the long-term social and economic impacts of drug use. While prevention remains the ideal, millions of Americans currently have a substance use disorder (SUD). SUD touches every community and neighborhood in our Nation, and the Administration aims to make finding treatment easier than finding drugs. The Strategy focuses on integrating addiction treatment into the mainstream healthcare system and, for the first time, addresses faith as an integral part of treatment and recovery. Finally, the Strategy celebrates the 23.5 million Americans in recovery, and is committed to helping more Americans achieve and sustain recovery by expanding and enhancing recovery support services and the peer support workforce across the Nation.
