1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
This session is a course designed to confront a rarely discussed but deeply impactful reality in the emergency services profession: the emotional harm that comes not from the calls themselves, but from the culture, behaviors, and interactions within the station, ambulance, or crew. While EMS providers are trained to manage high-acuity incidents and traumatic patient encounters, far fewer are prepared for bullying, belittlement, exclusion, intimidation, and reputational harm that can occur among peers and supervisors. This course explores how these experiences affect mental health, confidence, retention, performance, and long-term career satisfaction. Participants will learn to recognize the signs of peer-inflicted trauma, understand why it develops in high-stress environments, and examine the systemic and cultural factors that allow it to persist. The course offers practical strategies for fostering psychological safety, supporting colleagues, interrupting harmful dynamics, and building healthier team environments without compromising accountability or operational readiness. Through reflection, evidence-informed discussion, and scenario-based exploration, attendees will leave with tools to strengthen resilience, promote respect, and contribute to a culture where first responders feel valued, supported, and safe—both on the call and back at the station.
