Cleansing with Purpose: Rethinking Leg Wound Hygiene and Protecting Periwound Skin Integrity

This session reframes lower-limb cleansing as a therapeutic intervention central to successful venous leg ulcer management. Drawing on insights from the recent Wounds UK debate and IWII 2025 guidance, Dr Atkin will outline evidence-based approaches that strengthen skin integrity, reduce infection risk and optimise healing. Particular emphasis is placed on the often-overlooked periwound skin, recognising that inflammation, dryness and especially maceration, a frequent consequence of excess exudate and moisture imbalance, which can significantly delay wound healing. Attendees will learn structured cleansing techniques, strategies to prevent and manage maceration, and practical pathways for integrating comprehensive limb hygiene into routine care. The session aims to shift practice from task-based wound cleaning to purposeful, therapeutic limb preparation that improves comfort and healing outcomes.
