Session Description:This workshop is for addiction professionals aiming to enhance their clinical toolbox with research-informed strategies to support clients in parenting roles. Based on findings in generational trauma and epigenetics, this session examines how unresolved trauma and substance use affect individual clients and their children's development.

Participants will understand how addiction disrupts family systems and parenting capacity, especially in early recovery, often worsening cycles of disconnection, shame, and emotional neglect. Utilizing family systems theory, attachment science, and trauma-informed care, the presentation will present practical parenting tools and communication strategies to incorporate into treatment planning and psychoeducational efforts.

Particular focus will be given to how inherited trauma shapes behavior and stress responses across generations, and how early interventions can protect children of clients in recovery. Professionals will be better equipped to support clients as parents while contributing to breaking intergenerational cycles of addiction and dysfunction.

Takeaways:
Participants will understand the intersections of addiction, trauma, and parenting, along with practical, evidence-informed strategies to help clients rebuild family relationships. They will gain tools to discuss generational trauma, introduce core parenting skills in clinical settings, and apply principles from epigenetics and developmental science to guide recovery-focused family interventions.
