Session Description: The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) currently houses 20,369 inmates (ADOC Annual Legislative Statistical Report 2024). The Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles supervises 46,478(ABPP Annual Report 2024) justice involved individuals within the state of Alabama. Justice systems and Justice focused treatment providers face unique challenges in providing access to substance use treatment, the delivery of substance use treatment, the continuum of care, and the resources needed to support the recovery journey. This continuum provides an avenue for public health that results in public safety. A healthy community is a safe community.
Substance Use Treatment, medically assisted treatment, and Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) is vital to the health and wellbeing of incarcerated populations as well to the successful reentry of the justice involved population with identified substance use disorder. ADOC/ABPP has expanded resources to incorporate MOUD in the correctional and community supervision setting. The continuum of care from community supervision to incarceration and incarceration to community is key to the successful reintegration of our justice involved population. This replicable continuum model results in public safety throughout the communities we serve.
