Ms. Couch graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing (FNP) from Georgetown University in 2002. She is a Doctoral student in Nursing Practice-Systems Leadership (DNP-SL) at the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, she works as Director of Wound Care Services and Director of Employee Health Services at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She is an Associate Research Professor of Surgery at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University. Her wound care interests include caring for persons with limb loss/limb differences, complex abdominal wounds, and use of technology in wound healing.
Ms. Couch is the current Chair of the Alliance of Wound Care Stakeholders and the Immediate Past-President of the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC). Kara is a Fellow of the Association of the Advancement of Wound Care. Kara also serves on the Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee of the Amputee Coalition. She is an editorial board member of the International Wound Journal, Journal of Wound Management, and WoundSource 2026. She has authored or co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers and lectures nationally and internationally on wound care topics.

Accredited Industry-Supported Symposium: Slough and Debridement: Why Identifying Slough Matters for Successful Wound Healing

<strong>Learning Objectives:</strong><br>
1) Describe the composition of slough and necrotic matter and explain their role in increasing microbial burden and impairment of wound healing.<br>
2) Compare traditional and emerging debridement support technologies, including engineered fiber dressings and hypochlorous acid-based solutions and gels, with respect to their advantages, limitations, evidence base, and clinical applications. Examination of synergies.<br>
3) Evaluate the role of wound surface microacidification in optimizing desloughing and wound bed preparation and promoting a healable wound environment.<br>
4) Explore evidence-based strategies for achieving a healable wound bed, including the roles of debridement, microacidification, and combination therapies in optimizing wound healing outcomes.<br>

Susie Seaman

Susie Seaman is triple Board-Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Wound Care Nurse, and Wound Specialist, and is based in San Diego, California. She initially practiced as a CWOCN in the home health care arena for eight years before moving to the outpatient wound clinic setting 28 years ago. Since that time, Susie founded and then practiced in three large wound clinics in San Diego County. She is currently an educator and consultant, and is passionate about spreading the word regarding state-of-the-art care of patients with chronic wounds. Her special interests include holistic patient and wound evaluation, lower extremity and atypical wound care, topical therapy, bioburden management, and the use of advanced technologies. Susie serves on the Planning Committee for the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care, Spring and Fall meetings, and is the Secretary for the International Wound Infection Institute (IWII).

Pressure with Purpose: Using NPWT to Transform Urological Wound Healing

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has become an invaluable adjunct in the management of complex urological wounds, offering benefits that extend beyond traditional wound healing. Patients undergoing treatment for conditions such as Fournier's gangrene, radical pelvic surgery, urinary fistulas, perineal wounds, traumatic injuries, and complex reconstructive procedures often present with challenging wounds complicated by contamination, tissue loss, edema, and high exudate levels. This session will explore the unique considerations for applying NPWT in the urological patient, including wound assessment, protecting urinary diversions and exposed structures, managing moisture and contamination, dressing selection, pressure settings, and strategies to facilitate definitive closure. Through evidence-based recommendations, practical techniques, and clinical case studies, participants will gain confidence in incorporating NPWT safely and effectively into multidisciplinary urological wound management to improve healing, reduce complications, and optimize patient outcomes.

Daniel Stein

Daniel M. Stein, MD, MHS, FACS, is Chair of the Department of Urology at the George Washington University and an Associate Professor in Urology forcusing on Genitourinary Trauma and Reconstruction. He is a fellowship-trained reconstructive urologist whose clinical practice focuses on complex genitourinary reconstruction, genitourinary trauma, urethral stricture disease, neurogenic bladder, fistula, and complex genitourinary soft-tissue conditions.

Dr. Stein has particular expertise in the management of complex genital and perineal wounds, including Fournier’s gangrene, hidradenitis suppurativa, buried penis, and tissue loss resulting from trauma, infection, radiation, and prior surgery. His approach emphasizes appropriate debridement, advanced wound care, staged reconstruction, and multidisciplinary collaboration to restore both function and form.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Stein is actively involved in medical education and academic leadership. He previously served as Residency Program Director at George Washington University and continues to teach residents, fellows, and practicing clinicians on reconstructive urology and genitourinary trauma. His academic interests include improving operative strategies and multidisciplinary care for complex genitourinary injuries and wounds.
