Dr. Batki is Professor Emeritus (on recall), in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Weill Institute for Neurosciences at the UCSF School of Medicine. He is attending physician at the San Francisco VA Addiction Recovery Treatment Services (ARTS).
Dr. Batki is the senior investigator for the UCSF/SFVA Addiction Research Program and core faculty in the UCSF Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program.
Dr. Batki is also Consulting Addiction Psychiatrist at Alta Mira Recovery Programs in Sausalito, CA.
His substance use disorder (SUD) work spans across clinical care, teaching, and clinical research. Over the past 40 years he has led major SUD treatment programs including San Francisco General Hospital DSAAM from 1983-1999, SUNY Upstate Medical University’s SUD clinics from 1999-2007, and the SFVA ARTS programs until 2023.
Dr. Batki’s research focuses on the pharmacological treatment of SUDs and co-occurring psychiatric and medical disorders. He has conducted VA, DoD, NIDA, and NIAAA-funded research on the treatment of cocaine, methamphetamine, opioid, and alcohol use disorders. He treats patients with SUD and co-occurring disorders such as HIV and liver disease, as well as PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and psychosis.
Dr. Batki received his BA from Columbia University, his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University, and completed residency at UCSF. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, (Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry). He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Addiction Medicine). He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
