PAWSIC: Beyond the Wound Bed: Medications, Multimorbidity, and the Patient Who Will Not Heal

Many medications routinely used in wound care patients can impair the phases of tissue repair, yet the medication list rarely receives the same scrutiny as perfusion, pressure, or nutrition. In this expert panel discussion with a wound care nurse and a geriatric pharmacist, moderated by a geriatrician and certified wound specialist physician, faculty will cover how cumulative medication burden intersects with skin failure, and how to screen for it using the AGS Beers Criteria® and related tools. Panelists will also share how to build a structured medication review into wound assessment, document concerns so they survive care transitions, and communicate effectively with prescribers and consultant pharmacists. Attendees will leave with a practical, one-page medication red-flag screen they can apply to the non-healing wound.

Connect & Collaborate: Bridging Perspectives on Skin Failure

Designed as an interactive networking session, this debate-style program brings attendees together for roundtable discussions while experts present two contrasting perspectives on the science and ongoing controversies surrounding skin failure. Faculty will examine proposed mechanisms, histopathologic findings, diagnostic challenges, and regulatory considerations associated with skin breakdown in critically ill and medically complex patients. Through expert debate and peer-to-peer discussion, attendees will gain a balanced understanding of the evidence, current knowledge gaps, and priorities for future research.
