Dr. Atabong is a doctorally prepared, dual board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health and Family Nurse Practitioner with nearly 20 years of experience in healthcare. Dedicated to serving minorities and underserved populations, she is a strong advocate for reducing mental health stigma and improving access to culturally responsive care across communities. She co-owns a private outpatient mental health practice and serves as an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University’s Berkley School of Nursing and Coppin State University’s Helene Fuld School of Nursing, where she is helping develop the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program launching this year. She is the creator of The Mind Lab, an innovative clinical education platform delivering practical, case-based psychiatric insights to help clinicians sharpen decision-making and elevate patient care. Appointed in 2023 by Wes Moore as Commissioner for African Affairs for Maryland, she advances policies and initiatives that promote health equity, civic engagement, and economic empowerment for African immigrant communities statewide. She also holds leadership roles in several professional organizations, consults for pharmaceutical companies, and champions community-based mental health strategies. In 2024, she co-founded the Society of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners of Color, an organization dedicated to advancing equity, representation, and professional development in psychiatric nursing. A recipient of multiple awards, Dr. Atabong earned her BSN and MSN from Coppin State University (an HBCU), a post-master’s certificate from the University of Cincinnati, and her doctorate from Duke University. She also enjoys traveling and spending time with family.
