Jeremy Eberle, of Lincoln Nebraska, is a licensed therapist who has been providing services in the form of individuals, groups, couples, and families since 2010. Jeremy has focused primarily on treatment for substance use disorders as well as gambling disorders. In July of 2020 Jeremy and his business partner Janet Johnson successfully established Alternative Avenues in Lincoln Nebraska. Jeremy began working with clients who struggle with Video Game Use Disorders in 2017 and continues to work with this emerging population. Jeremy has held a variety esteemed positions such as Past President of the Nebraska Counseling Association and awarded NCA’s “Counselor of the Year” in 2024. In 2023 Jeremy held the position of Midwest Region Chair for the American Counseling Association and in 2025 Jeremy was the recipient of the National Council on Problem Gambling Direct Service Award which identifies Jeremy’s exemplary effort and dedication to the field of gambling/gaming disorders.

Unplug to Connect

<b>Session Description</b>: This presentation explores how increased reliance on technology, particularly gaming and gambling, can shape communication patterns and interfere with real-world connection. Using an attachment-style model, presenters will examine how problematic gaming and gambling behaviors may function to reduce vulnerability and manage distress, while also limiting opportunities to develop and maintain healthy relational bonds.<br><br>Participants will learn practical, attachment-informed clinical strategies to assess how attachment needs and relational patterns show up in treatment for gaming and gambling concerns. The session will introduce adaptable tools and interventions that support movement toward secure connection, such as structured assessment questions to identify attachment-related triggers, techniques for strengthening emotional regulation and tolerance of closeness, and conversation frameworks that support healthy boundary-setting and reconnection with supportive others.<br><br>A brief case example will illustrate how attachment patterns can maintain technology-driven avoidance and how targeted interventions can increase confidence in building real-world relationships. Attendees will leave prepared to integrate attachment-informed approaches into treatment planning and to identify practical indicators of progress toward stronger connection.

Janet Johnson

Since 2006, Mrs. Johnson has been providing therapy utilizing a unique combination of Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy with solution focused results. Janet is dually licensed allowing her to address both mental health and substance use disorders encompassing the wide complexity of hurdles that often manifest somewhere in-between. For nearly 20 years, Janet has provided therapy in the form of individual, families, youth, and adults. Janet specializes in helping couples and family members affected by mental health and addition problems. Janet is also certified as a gambling disorder counselor and utilizes her treatment approaches to help youth and adults redefine their relationships with gaming, internet, and social media use. Janet has been the recipient of “Counselor of the Year” by the Nebraska Counseling Association (NCA) in 2019 and 2022 and held the position of NCA Membership Chair from 2022-2026, encouraging both personal and professional development within her practice.
