Invisible Season: Marking The Journey From Substance Use And Trauma to Treatment

Session Description: Take time to explore the often-unseen progression from the early development of substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions to engagement in treatment. This work explores how trauma, mental health challenges, and substance use intersect over time, shaping both individual experiences and system-level responses. By tracing this trajectory, the presentation highlights how symptoms and needs frequently remain unrecognized or fragmented across service systems, contributing to delayed or inadequate care.

The presentation identifies three critical points of effective intervention along the continuum: early recognition and prevention, timely access to integrated and trauma-integrated services, and sustained engagement during treatment and recovery. Participants will be introduced to practical tools and strategies that support action at each point, including structured ways to identify emerging needs early, strengthen referral and care coordination for integrated services, and support sustained engagement during treatment and recovery.

It surmises that the person, process and community can build a sustaining foundation of wellness. It then leads participants on a journey to craft and share the narrative of this Invisible Season with others to recruit support and resources. By increasing awareness and ability to share these “tough times” of surviving to thriving, this presentation underscores the importance of coordinated, trauma-informed, and person-centered approaches. Attendees will leave prepared to identify where gaps occur in their own settings, select an intervention point, and use the tools and narrative framework to strengthen coordination and engagement across the continuum.
