Burnout is often described as an emotional or psychological problem, but for EMS professionals it's fundamentally a physiologic condition driven by chronic exposure to stress, sleep disruption, trauma, and operational demands. This session translates current medical and neurobiological research into practical understanding that EMS providers and leaders can use to protect workforce health.
Attendees will learn how the stress response system changes after repeated exposure to high-adrenaline work. We will explore how cortisol dysregulation contributes to fatigue, impaired concentration, irritability, cardiovascular strain, and increased injury risk. Participants will also examine the emerging science behind “micro-recovery,” hydration status, nutrition timing, circadian disruption, and the cumulative effect of disrupted sleep cycles common in EMS shift work. The session then shifts from physiology to actionable solutions.
Using evidence from high-performance teams (military, aviation, tactical medicine), we will cover wellness strategies that fit into real EMS environments: brief on-shift recovery practices, fatigue countermeasures, station-level habits that improve autonomic balance, and agency-wide operational adjustments that reduce physiologic load without increasing cost. By connecting the science of burnout with practical, field-tested interventions, this presentation gives EMS professionals tools to improve their health, sustain their careers, and enhance safety for themselves, their partners, and their patients.
