Elizabeth is the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, Director, Trauma, and Injury Specialty Care Program. Elizabeth is responsible for system oversite for Adult/Pediatric Trauma/Burn, Hand/Upper-extremity injury, and Eye Injury. Elizabeth has 42 years of frontline medical care experience including experience as a paramedic, emergency medicine nurse, flight and critical transport nurse, neurotrauma critical care nurse, and trauma program director of operations. She enjoys clinical medicine, teaching, mentoring all medical disciplines, and statewide trauma system development. Elizabeth is passionate about serving the needs of people across the world including missions in Mozambique and Haiti. Elizabeth has served on the board of directors for the WV Diabetes Camp for more than 30 years, and serves as part of the medical team during camp.

EMS Survival Guide to Diabetes Camp: From Campfires to Ketones

Summer camps are something all kids look forward to. How do you create, manage, and maintain a camp made that requires medical oversight? Camp Kno-Koma is a summer camp for children aged 7-15 who are Type 1 diabetics in West Virginia. Every summer, kids from West Virginia and surrounding states gather along the Greenbrier River for a summer camp experience like no other. The campers are in a safe environment to learn to live with diabetes, see other campers with diabetes just like them, and most of all be themselves. These kids return year after year for the adventure, education and friendships. We will look at the logistical side of maintaining a medical summer camp. How is it funded? How is it staffed? What entities are involved? Where does EMS come into play? These are just a few questions we will discuss.

Steven Norman

Steven Norman, NRP, is a Paramedic for Indianapolis EMS in Indianapolis, Indiana. He joined Indianapolis EMS as a Paramedic in 2021 coming from Monongalia EMS in Morgantown, West Virginia. He began his EMS career in 2015 as an EMT-B and received his Paramedic Certificate from New River Community & Technical College in Fairmont, West Virginia shortly after. He is a preceptor for Indianapolis EMS Paramedic Program and a Field Training Officer. While acting as a District Medic, he continues to educate BLS crews. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Diabetes Camp of WV for 20 years and is a Paramedic for the Medical Team during camp while working through different roles. Steven coordinates with local and state law enforcement, EMS, and DHS for camp.
