Jeremiah Partin, MHA, NRP, is the Program Director for the EMS programs at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee, where he leads EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, and Critical Care education. He is a flight and critical care paramedic with years of frontline experience in helicopter and ground EMS systems. Jeremiah is currently pursuing a PhD in Clinical Research from the University of Jamestown with a professional focus on elevating EMS involvement in scientific inquiry. He oversees clinical education for continuing EMS education nationally with SolvedHealth AI on the intersection of EMS practice, research literacy, and professional identity, and is passionate about empowering EMS clinicians to shape their own evidence base.

From Boo-Boo Bus to Bench Science: Why EMS Must Own Its Future Through Research

Prehospital medicine continues to evolve rapidly, yet EMS remains one of the least-represented professions in clinical research, leaving critical decisions about protocols, airway management, resuscitation, and system design to external disciplines. This presentation argues that EMS must reclaim ownership of its evidence base by empowering EMTs, paramedics, educators, and leaders to participate in and lead research at every level. Drawing from current literature, the session highlights the risks of relying solely on physician- or hospital-driven studies, the unique value of street-level clinical insights, and the professional gains associated with developing a research culture in EMS. Attendees will explore accessible pathways into research, including quality improvement projects, retrospective reviews, observational studies, and collaborative investigations. They will leave with practical strategies to initiate research within their own agency. This session positions research not as an academic luxury, but as a necessary mechanism for advancing patient care, professional identity, and the long-term autonomy of EMS as a clinical discipline.
