Becky Johnson is an EMS and fire-service educator with more than 15 years of experience in instructional design, simulation-based training, and curriculum development. As Director of Education & Training at Allied Medical Training, she leads EMR/EMT program delivery, manages NREMT skills exams, and develops curriculum that emphasizes psychomotor proficiency and affective-domain skills. Becky also serves as Training Captain for the Mendota Heights Fire Department, where she designs and leads the department’s Fire Academy and department training, providing hands-on coaching to firefighters. Her background spans biochemistry, corporate learning leadership, and frontline responder experience, giving her a multidisciplinary approach to preparing competent, confident, and resilient emergency providers.

Safe to Fail, Ready to Perform: Using Realistic Simulation to Build Competent and Compassionate EMS Providers

Simulation-based education has consistently been shown to improve clinical performance, critical thinking, and long-term retention, often more effectively than traditional field or clinical rotations. Research in healthcare, aviation, and other high-risk professions demonstrates that learners develop skills more efficiently when they can practice in a controlled, psychologically safe environment where errors carry no real-world consequences. Simulated patient encounters offer EMS learners the opportunity to make decisions, experience the outcomes of those decisions, and refine their approach without jeopardizing patient safety. This structure allows educators to target specific competencies, reinforce best practices, and create consistent learning experiences that real-world clinical settings cannot always provide.

This session will give EMS educators a practical framework for designing and facilitating effective simulations, even without technology. Participants will learn how to create realistic scenarios tied to learning objectives, maintain learner engagement, and guide scenarios in ways that promote clinical reasoning rather than rote task performance. The session will also highlight the critical role of debriefing, supported by learning science research showing it to be one of the most powerful components of simulation-based education. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies they can immediately apply within their own training environments.

Sean Ewen, MD, is the Founder and CEO of Allied Medical Training, a state-licensed, CAPCE-accredited education company that prepares EMS providers for real-world response and certification success. Starting his career as an EMT and rising to EMS supervisor before attending medical school, Dr. Ewen brings a rare blend of field operations, leadership, and clinical training to EMS education. He builds high-performance training systems that combine evidence-based medicine with practical, street-ready decision-making. He has designed and delivered initial certification and continuing education programs across the full spectrum of EMS provider levels, emphasizing scenario-based learning, technology enhanced learning, clinical reasoning, and durable skills under pressure. At EMS World, he shares actionable approaches to improve learner outcomes, standardize quality at scale, and strengthen the link between training and patient care.
