Anthony Correia is a 49-year fire & emergency service professional, co-owner of a safety consulting and training business, who challenges the status quo. 35 years as a senior executive. Graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program. He has extensive experience & understanding of interpersonal communication as it relates to provider and patient relationships and interactions. He has worked through the challenges of facilitating organizational cultural evolution in several organizations. An active emergency services educator for 39 years who writes his own programs from a unique & thought-provoking perspective. He has presented at multiple national, regional, and local conferences, as well as internationally. He is an active firefighter, paramedic, and emergency services instructor. He has been published in several Fire and EMS trade publications.

Compassion: A First-Line EMS Therapy: Evidence-Based Practices for Patient and Provider Well-Being

Compassion is not merely a "nice-to-have" attribute; evidence-based research confirms it as a powerful, first-line therapy with quantifiable clinical and emotional benefits. This session will explore a holistic approach to patient management, focusing on the mind-body vonnection and the critical importance of empathetic behaviors during the patient's most vulnerable moments. Given that EMS is often the first and longest uninterrupted contact a patient has with the healthcare system, our initial 15 minutes of interaction can dramatically influence long-term outcomes, stress levels, and overall trust.

The program will dive into research from fields like Compassionomics and Patch Adams' work, aligning these findings with the critical emphasis on the Affective Domain outlined in the 2021 National EMS Education Standards. We will address why providers, working in high-stress environments, often become disillusioned, and how re-prioritizing compassion can reverse burnout, improve organizational culture, increase job satisfaction, and most importantly, enhance patient and caregiver satisfaction and quality of life. Attendees will leave with transferable, research-based examples to immediately implement in their agencies.
