Melinda Wilson, MAOL, CPC, CCEMT-P, NRP, serves as the Injury Prevention and Trauma Outreach Coordinator for the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. She holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership and a Bachelor of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management, providing a strong foundation in system coordination and program development. With 13 years of experience in EMS and ER settings, her work as a Community Paramedic offers unique insight into social determinants of health and the challenges faced in diverse communities. Melinda also serves on medical missions to remote areas of the Dominican Republic, providing clinical care and medical translation that support culturally informed prevention efforts. Melinda contributes nationally through NAEMT, IBSC, and NAMIHP, as well with regional and state committees.

Innovating Care Delivery: The Community Paramedic’s Role in Injury Prevention

Community paramedicine offers EMS professionals a powerful opportunity to reduce preventable injuries before they occur. This session explores the growing role of the community paramedic (CP) in injury prevention and how CPs can make meaningful, measurable impacts in the communities they serve. By working directly in homes and community settings, CPs are uniquely positioned to identify hazards, address social determinants of health, and connect individuals with resources that improve safety and long-term wellbeing.

Using practical examples and experience from both field operations and trauma system outreach, this presentation highlights key prevention strategies CPs can integrate into their daily practice, including fall prevention, home safety evaluations, risk-factor screening, and collaboration with public health and trauma centers. Attendees will learn how community paramedics contribute to reducing disparities, improving patient engagement, and lowering system burden through proactive, relationship-based care.

Participants will leave with actionable tools and insights to strengthen or develop CP injury prevention initiatives, enhance community partnerships, and expand the impact of mobile integrated healthcare within their region.
