Tyler Yost serves as EMS Director for the Lemont Fire Protection District, overseeing EMS operations across four stations and directing department-wide and MABAS regional training initiatives. Tyler is also a lead lecturing instructor for the Silver Cross Hospital Paramedic Program, where he oversees the construction and structure of all paramedic practical examinations. Tyler redesigned the program’s lab and scenario framework to support large, high-performing cohorts of 50 students and launched Silver Cross Hospital’s EMT Program, developing its curriculum and instructional model from the ground up. Known for delivering high-energy, visually engaging sessions, he challenges providers and educators to raise their standards and rethink how they lead and learn. A returning presenter at EMS World Expo, he is passionate about mentorship-driven instruction and developing confident, capable EMS professionals at every level.

Recalibrating the Instructor: Shifting from Teaching to Mentoring

Yes, I understand

EMS education has standards for nearly everything—except knowing when the instructor might need recalibrating.
Today’s students may communicate differently, respond to authority differently, and need something different from us than the students we taught ten—or even five—years ago. The standard has not changed. But sometimes, the way we help students reach it should.

Through real classroom stories, honest reflection, and a little appropriately placed sarcasm, this session examines four instructor recalibrations: teaching the person—not just EMS; leading with trust—not just authority; choosing growth—not just tradition; and grading the work while still developing the person.

This is not a call to lower expectations, abandon accountability, or pretend every student deserves a participation trophy. It is an invitation to question a few practices we may be defending simply because they are familiar—and to consider what becomes possible when connection and standards are allowed to exist in the same classroom.

Because sometimes the student is not the only person in the room who still has something to learn.
