Obstetrics For EMS

Jay Rodriguez has been a practicing Paramedic for over 20 years, with the last twelve as a critical care Paramedic. He holds multiple collegiate degrees including both an associates and Bachelors of EMS. While completing a large independent study course on prehospital obstetrics for his bachelor’s degree, he came to the startling realization that there was a significant number of obstetrical issues he could realistically have to manage in the field, but never received any training on in Paramedic school. From that point on, his mission has become to improve prehospital obstetrics and he has never looked back. He combined years of extensive training in Midwifery and Doula work with decades in EMS to create Obstetrics for EMS: the first ever comprehensive set of Obstetrics courses for the EMS provider.

2026 Sessions

Prehospital Management of Routine and Complex Childbirth

This course provides a comprehensive education in routine and complex childbirth. Over the course of eight hours, students will learn about all aspects of childbirth—starting with anatomy and physiology and ending with shoulder dystocia and breech presentation culminating in a final scenario using real actresses simulating a complex delivery. Each student will learn skills such as how to accurately assess a pregnant and laboring patient and how to determine whether true active labor or pushing is occurring. How to handle all aspects of a routine delivery, newborn assessment, and resuscitation, and how to handle complications such as a hemorrhage, cord prolapse, shoulder dystocia, or breech presentation. They will attain these skills through a combination of both hands on and didactic activities, leading up to the final scenario. Each student will receive a textbook, pens, and both a wallet sized and framable certificate at the end of the course.
