Dr. David Rayburn MD MPH is an Assistant Professor Clinical Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at Louisiana State University. He serves as the Fellowship Director for the LSU EMS Fellowship. He is also a board certified EMS physician and serves as the Medical Director for New Orleans EMS, Lakefront Regional Airport and Audubon Nature Institute. Dr. Rayburn helped start the POCUS program at New Orleans EMS and create an Advanced Practice Paramedic Program to add additional skills to paramedics who are trained in POCUS and Blood administration. His clinical and research interests include paramedic education, simulation, OHCA, and pre-hospital POCUS.

Intro to Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for the EMS Provider: A Hands-on Experience

Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is a a tool previously reserved for critical care paramedicine and helicopter EMS systems that has made its way to ground ambulance systems. With literature supporting the ability to effectively train paramedics in its use and the cost of devices coming down, it has opened up the opportunity to expand its use in all aspects of the prehospital environment. POCUS has a wide range of uses for EMS including trauma, cardiac arrest, differentiating causes of dyspnea, IV access, and abdominal pain.

Join us for this four-hour workshop that will focus on the hands-on aspect of POCUS training and education and give attendees the fundamentals of performing basic ultrasound skills that can influence management in the prehospital setting. A mixed lecture and hand-on skills lab will mesh introduction to lung, cardiac, and FAST ultrasound with live scanning with EMS physicians, EM physicians, and ultrasound trained paramedics. Hear from the medical directors regarding setting up initial education and training including supporting literature for POCUS use. Also learn from paramedics currently using this skill regarding the initial challenges they faced as well as how POCUS fits in to their daily workflow.

Jessica Barbour, NRP, BS is a nationally recognized paramedic, prehospital ultrasound expert, and co-founder of Frontline Sono. Having used point-of-care ultrasound extensively in high-acuity 911 EMS, trauma, and emergency department practice, she brings a practical, field-tested perspective to ultrasound education. Her expertise is grounded not only in research and program development, but in real-world clinical experience using POCUS to guide critical decisions at the patient's side.

Michael A. Kling, DO, is an emergency medicine resident on the EMS/Disaster Medicine track at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans and a returning EMS Expo faculty member. His areas of expertise include field ultrasound, resuscitation, and emerging prehospital technology. He frequently teaches on these topics to both paramedics at New Orleans EMS and medical students at LSU. His current research and development centers on pseudo PEA (specifically PREM), prehospital blood transfusion, prehospital clinical decision support and AI in the prehospital setting.
