This session is designed to help better prepare you to respond to incidents where school children & teachers have become victims of school gun violence. The increased frequency of school shootings has been devastating attacks that make planning, preparedness, quick response, and accurate assessment by EMS / Fire essential. We must train and prepare for school shootings because they continue to occur and will make the national news! We have learned that hemorrhage control is critical! In this session, we will focus on the response to school shootings when the police yell over the radio, “We need EMS & Fire.”
In this session, we will explain how EMS systems become overloaded with requests for service. It will better prepare responders to care for children that they know from the community, including their own. During this session, we will break down the roles involved in managing a school shooting. We will review scene safety, how to manage the scene, including dealing with concerned parents and reunification. We will also explain how to respect the crime scene. We will review recent case studies and will include school shooting data for your state. We will explain both BLS & ALS treatment for gunshot wounds.
