Description: Some of the most invasive monitoring devices we see in critical care transport are intracranial pressure monitoring devices and drains. Transport of these devices is a low-frequency encounter for most teams, can be challenging in a helicopter or ambulance, and poses significant risk to the patient. This presentation will cover the differences in ICP monitors and drains, including external ventricular drains (EVDs), “bolts”, and intraparenchymal monitors; why and how they are placed; waveforms and changes to recognize; and how to manage them in transport. This presentation is geared towards those that have no to little experience with ICP monitoring, as well as those that want a refresher.
