EMS requires leaders who can effectively navigate the unpredictable nature of EMS and ensure both operational efficiency and team cohesiveness. The Situational Leadership model, as developed by Hersey and Blanchard, provides EMS managers and supervisors with an adaptive approach to leadership by tailoring their behavior to the development level of their team members. This presentation explores the Situational Leadership II (SLII) model, focusing on the importance of adapting leadership styles based on the competence and commitment of EMS personnel. The SLII model emphasizes four core leadership styles—directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating—that correspond to the varying development levels of team members. In the dynamic environment of EMS, leaders must be adept at assessing the evolving needs of their crews and apply the appropriate leadership style to foster professional growth, maintain morale, and ensure effective patient care. This presentation will guide participants in understanding the SLII model's relevance to day-to-day leadership in EMS. Attendees will learn how to utilize different leadership approaches based on the situation, enhancing their ability to lead effectively in emergency medical settings. Participants will leave the session with actionable strategies for assessing team needs, adapting leadership styles, and improving overall team performance.
