Session Description: Addiction rewires the brain, and recovery must rewire it back. Yet most recovery support systems are designed around compliance and monitoring rather than the neuroscience of change. This session translates the research on neuroplasticity, habit formation, and craving into concrete design principles for recovery support services, including peer programs, recovery housing, continuing care, and community-based supports. Participants will examine how repetition, reward, environment, and relationship each shape neural pathways, and why some program structures accelerate durable change while others inadvertently reinforce old patterns. Case examples illustrate how plasticity-informed adjustments improve retention and long-term outcomes without increasing program cost. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for evaluating their own programs against the science of brain change, plus specific, low-cost modifications that help participants build the new pathways that sustained recovery requires.
