Location: A311-312 GWCC - Over the last decade, the United States has experienced an unprecedented and complex overdose epidemic driven by new synthetic drugs, primarily fentanyl. However, to fully understand and efficiently address this epidemic, it is critical to be aware of the constantly changing composition of fentanyl and how it contributes to overdose

This presentation will provide data from several Colombo Plan/CFSRE projects using state of the art technologies to test wholesale and retail-level drugs, uncovering hidden factors that drive overdose and chronic health problems. It will identify the changing and emerging fentanyl patterns that drive overdose (fentanyl powder drug mixtures; lethal composition of today’s fentanyl pills; new xylazine patterns; and new, liquid forms of fentanyl that could take this epidemic to another level). Implications for fentanyl test strips and naloxone will also be addressed.

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
· Identify the major constituents of fentanyl powder and pills contributing to mortality (overdose) and morbidity (health problems) over the last decade
· Understand an emerging threat of liquid forms of fentanyl that can cause further mortality and prolong the current overdose epidemic
· Recognize the need to improve current and develop new technologies to prevent overdose
