David J. Callans is Associate Director of the Arrhythmia Service at the University of Pennsylvania Health System and Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine. He attended college at the University of Chicago and medical school at Johns Hopkins University. His residency and fellowships in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology were performed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is married to Melissa Callans, a nurse practitioner in electrophysiology and mother to twin 15 year old daughters Morgan and Mckenna. In addition, he is the proud father of two children from a prior marriage: Lauren (25) who is currently a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania and Chris (30) who is a promising young computer scientist.

Dr. Callans’ research interests include complex ablation and mechanisms of ventricular tachycardia. He is currently working on the seventh edition of the classic Josephson textbook Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology: Techniques and Interpretations.
