Johannes Brachmann
MD PhD

Prof. Johannes Brachmann studied Medicine at the University of Heidelberg. In 1980-1981 he spent two years as a fellow of the German Research Foundation at the Univ. of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center under the mentorship of Prof. Ralph Lazzara and Prof. Benjamin Scherlag in Oklahoma City. During this period significant research was conducted and published on mechanisms of ischemia-induced reentry and on early afterdepolarizations. After his clinical training at the department of cardiology at the Univ. of Heidelberg, he became a board certified cardiologist in 1985. During the same year he was appointed to lead the electrophysiological studiy group in the department. He was responsible for the first implantation of an ICD with an antitachycardia function in 1986. In 1989 he completed his PhD thesis on mechanisms of class III antiarrhythmic drugs. During his tenure at the Univ. of Heidelberg, he was appointed Professor of Medicine and Cardiology and became deputy chief of cardiology in 1996. In 1998 he was appointed chief of cardiology at Klinikum Coburg which became one of the largest department of cardiology in Germany during his tenure. Among the achievements was the impementation of two MRI units into cardiology and the setup of interventional, electrophysiological and structural laboratories, Several national and international multicenter trials were conducted and latest medical technology tested and brought to clinical routine. In 2016, a new Medical School REGIOMED was founded in collaboration with the Univ. of Split, Croatia. Prof. Brachmann has been leading this project since the beginning.
