I am a licensed clinical psychologist, public health scientist, and academic administrator focused on advancing science, practice, and policies related to improving mental health and addiction outcomes across the lifespan. I have authored >400 peer-reviewed publications across a wide spectrum of journals, including JAMA, NEJM, and Psychological Bulletin. I have served as PI on externally-funded grants totaling over $80M in overall costs. Major foci of my work include: (1) Monitoring the behavioral epidemiology of e-cigarette, cigarette, and other substance use across the lifespan; (2) Smoking cessation and nicotine addiction psychopharmacology; (3) addictive behaviors in priority populations; (4) Science to inform policies for regulating tobacco and other addictive commercial products. In addition to research programs I directly lead or participate in, I am Founding Executive Director the USC Institute for Addiction Science—a university-wide initiative that supports collaborative transdisciplinary addiction research and education. This Institute supports infrastructure for 94 faculty addiction experts across 10 colleges and schools across the University of Southern California. I am also Center MPI of the USC Tobacco Center for Regulatory Science—an NCI/FDA-funded program of science to inform federal regulation of tobacco products involving 20 investigators, 3 core resources, and 4 research projects. Beyond roles in academia, I engage in public health service, including serving on expert panels or as an advisor to guide policies on addictive drugs convened by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, U.S. FDA, U.S. Surgeon General, U.S. White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and World Health Organization.
