Dr. Robert A. Lookstein, MD, MHCDL, FSIR, FAHA, FSVM,
A 1995 graduate of the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University College of Medicine, Dr. Lookstein honed his skills through a rigorous residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at Mount Sinai Hospital. His association with Mount Sinai has been both enduring and impactful, culminating in his current roles as Professor of Radiology and Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine and Executive Vice Chairman of the Department of Diagnostic, Molecular, and Interventional Radiology for the Mount Sinai Health System .
Beyond his clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Lookstein is deeply invested in research that shapes the future of vascular care. He has been instrumental in several pivotal studies, including the VENITE VICI venous stent trial, the SAVAL study on drug-coated stents in lower leg arteries, the PRESERVE registry evaluating the safety and efficacy of Inferior Vena Cava filters, the InPACT AV trial evaluating the role of drug coated balloons for hemodialysis fistula maintenance, the STORM-PE trial evaluating the role of percutaneous thrombectomy for acute pulmonary embolism, and the NHLBI-funded BEST-CLI trial assessing endovascular revascularization for critical limb ischemia .
His leadership extends to the global stage, where he serves as the 2025–2026 President of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). In this capacity, Dr. Lookstein advocates for a longitudinal clinical practice model in interventional radiology, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork and the integration of artificial intelligence to enhance patient outcomes .
