First-Line Decisions: Lifestyle Modification or Medication? Early Treatment Pathways for PTSD

Determining the optimal first-line approach for posttraumatic stress disorder requires careful clinical judgment, as patients vary widely in symptom presentation, readiness for trauma work, and co-occurring conditions. This session will review the key factors that guide whether to begin with evidence-based psychotherapies—such as Cognitive Processing Therapy or Prolonged Exposure—or to initiate pharmacotherapy with SSRIs, SNRIs, or prazosin for targeted symptoms. Faculty will also discuss the role of sleep stabilization, physical activity, grounding skills, and other lifestyle supports in early PTSD care. Participants will learn to create personalized, stepwise treatment plans that balance symptom relief, patient preference, and long-term functional recovery.
