It is said that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." So is race—an interpretation of the physical characteristics of a person. It should not define us, but it can (and does) have both positive and negative effects on our patient care, our ability to work with one another, and our productivity in the classroom. Do you know the difference between race and ethnicity? Should you? How receptive are you to different beliefs and backgrounds? Fortunately, internal biases are malleable. We can teach ourselves to minimize the impact of unconscious bias in the work we live and work in. If we want to truly expand our scope and continue to gain the respect we know our profession demands, then we must be willing to examine the culture we bring to it. This presentation offers opportunities for reflection and viewing the differences between color-blind and color-brave.
