Introduction of new technologies can be daunting to older adults and care professionals that support them. Communities need to carefully select the technologies and/or devices they choose to use so that they are not a hinderance to care or a burden to the community and that they add value to the care being provided. Advances in technology embedded into the daily care and routine of residents in assisted living and independent living communities are designed to offload burden and increase peace of mind for care providers, residents, and families. With the evolution of novel technologies, we as care professionals should strive to be opened minded to give new technologies a try in a responsible manner as we may not know all the benefits of new devices until we utilize them. As the variety and number of technologies and devices become available to healthcare providers, the methodologies of trialing these options are also expanding. The process for engagement with a technology provider should also be as least burdensome as possible to facilitate efficient assessment by the considering care community. In this discussion we will talk about best practices to communicate and roll out new technology trials in the communities we serve. Some technologies will benefit individuals and some will benefit the entire community, the role out process will look different for each type of technology. Getting buy in from residents and their families is essential to ensure that the technology has the best chance to providing communities with its full potential.
