Sponsored by MediWound.

EscharEx is a novel biological drug, that consists of a concentrate of proteolytic enzymes enriched in bromelain. It is currently in late-stage clinical development for wound bed preparation and facilitation of wound closure in patients with venous leg ulcers (VLU). The same active ingredient comprises NexoBrid®, a medicinal product indicated for eschar removal in adults with deep partial thickness and full thickness burns that was approved in the United States in 2022 and in the EU in 2012. Previous phase II, randomized controlled clinical studies have assessed the safety and efficacy of EscharEx in the treatment of chronic wounds, including VLU, diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), and traumatic ulcers, and have also elucidated its unique multimodal mechanism of action. Drawing on data from controlled clinical trials with EscharEx, this breakfast symposium will include discussion of the importance of wound bed preparation and specifically debridement, promotion of granulation tissue, and reduction of bioburden and biofilm in wound healing and will present data for the safety and efficacy of EscharEx versus collagenase SANTYL® ointment, the currently available enzymatic debriding agent.
