Skin of Color Dermatology: Diagnostic Pearls and Treatment Considerations in Everyday Practice

Diagnosis and treatment in skin of color require attention to morphology, pigmentary response, scarring risk, hair practices, cultural context, and patient priorities. This session reviews practical diagnostic pearls for common and complex dermatologic conditions that may present differently across skin tones. Topics include inflammatory disease, pigmentary disorders, acne, alopecia, procedural planning, and counseling around post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.

Scott Elman, MD, FAAD is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology in the Dr. Phillip Frost Department of Dermatology & Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine who also serves as the Director of Inpatient Dermatology Services at the University of Miami Hospital. Dr. Elman received his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School in 2016, where he stayed to complete his combined residency in internal medicine and dermatology. His clinical and research interests include complex medical dermatology, rheumatologic dermatology and inpatient dermatology. He is an active member of the Medical Dermatology Society, the Rheumatologic Dermatology Society and the Society of Dermatology Hospitalists. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Elman enjoys cooking, traveling and spending time with his wife and two children.

Non-Scarring Alopecia Beyond Autoimmunity: Diagnosis and Treatment Strategies

Non-scarring alopecia includes a broad range of conditions beyond alopecia areata, from telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia to traction alopecia, nutritional contributors, endocrine disorders, and medication-related hair loss. This session reviews diagnostic patterns, history-taking, scalp examination, laboratory evaluation, and treatment approaches. Special attention will be given to identifying reversible causes and counseling patients on realistic timelines for regrowth.

Ryan Stidham

Ryan Stidham is a translational scientist caring exclusively for patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Ryan joined Mayo Clinic Florida in 2025 with a joint appointment in the Division of Gastroenterology and the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics, where he serves as the Director of AI Clinical Partnerships. Prior to this he was a tenured Professor in both the Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics and Department of Medicine where he served as the Associate Chair of Translational Research.

His research focus is technology development for improving disease activity measurement, clinical trial endpoint development, and automating care in IBD. Dr. Stidham’s research team has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, the Broad Foundation, the Leona Helmsley Charitable Trust, and several industry sponsored research collaborations. His team's work has been licensed by several technology companies and is being actively used in drug development.

Dr. Stidham received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine training at the University of Pennsylvania, and was an NIH T-32 Research Fellow of Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Stidham has advanced training in medical imaging physics, signals analysis, electronic data management, and clinical research design and statistical analysis. He lives in Jacksonville, Florida with his wife Carrie and daughter Violet.

Scarring Alopecia and Lichen Planopilaris: Early Intervention and Treatment Strategy

Scarring alopecias require early recognition and prompt treatment to prevent irreversible hair loss. This session focuses on lichen planopilaris and related cicatricial alopecias, including diagnostic clues, trichoscopic findings, biopsy strategy, disease activity assessment, and treatment escalation. The discussion will include anti-inflammatory approaches, symptom control, patient counseling, and long-term monitoring for stabilization rather than full regrowth.

Emma Guttman-Yassky, MD, PhD, is the Waldman Professor of Dermatology and Immunology and Health System Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. She is Director of the Center of Excellence in Eczema, Director of the Laboratory for Inflammatory Skin Diseases, and Co-Director of the Mount Sinai Clinique Skin Aging Center.

Dr. Guttman earned her MD from the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University and her PhD from Bar-Ilan University, Israel. After completing dermatology training in Israel, she pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at The Rockefeller University, followed by a second dermatology residency at Weill Cornell Medical College, where she obtained American board certification.

Her research focuses on atopic dermatitis (eczema), hair loss disorders, and skin aging. She has made paradigm-shifting discoveries defining the immunologic basis of atopic dermatitis in both adults and children, leading to the development of targeted therapies. Her work has also advanced the understanding and treatment of alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, chronic hand eczema, keloids, ichthyosis, and other inflammatory skin diseases.

Dr. Guttman co-founded the International Eczema Council and is its past president. She has received numerous national and international awards, delivered keynote and plenary lectures worldwide, and authored more than 475 peer-reviewed publications in leading medical journals.

James G. Krueger is Head of the Laboratory for Investigative Dermatology at The Rockefeller University in New York, NY, USA. He also serves as Physician and Co-director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science at the Rockefeller University Hospital, and as Chief Executive Officer of the Rockefeller University Hospital.

Dr Krueger earned his Bachelor's degree from Princeton University (Princeton, NJ, USA) and a PhD degree in virology and cell biology from The Rockefeller University. He received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College (New York City), where he also completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in dermatology. Dr Krueger is certified by the American Board of Dermatology.

His research group at The Rockefeller University was the first to conduct clinical trials with specific, targeted immune antagonists in psoriasis and this work established that elimination of pathogenic Tcells from skin lesions could reverse the full pathological phenotype of psoriasis. Since then, his group has used immune-based therapeutics to dissect inflammatory pathways in psoriasis, Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and Atopic dermatitis (AD) as well as other inflammatory skin conditions, and to conduct parallel pharmacogenomic studies that define mechanisms of targeted therapeutics in human populations. Dr Krueger has been an advocate of bidirectional translational research (bench to bedside and back) in humans to dissect pathogenic pathways that cannot be studied in animal models, particularly for skin diseases.
