Amy Gutman, MD, FACEP, is an emergency physician, educator, and CEO/Founder of ToughLoveMD, known for translating frontline medicine into high-impact, no-nonsense education. She began her career in EMS and fire rescue in 1987, building a foundation of service that still drives her work today. Board certified in Emergency Medicine since 2008, she holds fellowships in prehospital care and resuscitation, with additional certifications in maritime medicine and leadership. Dr. Gutman currently works as a locums ER physician, serving rural and underserved communities. Her career spans EMS, aeromedical, maritime, research, EDs, and ICUs across the U.S., Bermuda, and the Caribbean. A former medical director and associate professor, she is passionate about cutting through noise, sharpening clinical judgment, and improving patient outcomes through education that actually changes practice.

This talk blends real-world EMS experience, leadership insight, and career strategy to help attendees maximize opportunities, avoid burnout, and plan for long-term success — whether they stay in EMS or transition into advanced or alternative roles.

EKG FUBAR: Avoiding the Clean Kill

It’s not about being right - it’s about not being wrong when it counts. EKG interpretation is rarely about
perfect pattern recognition; it’s about making the right decision in real time with incomplete information. In
this high-impact, case-based session, emergency physician Dr. Amy Gutman uses 3 critical EKG cases to
show how clinical context, not just the tracing, determines the outcome.

Through real-world and rapid-fire EMS scenarios, participants move beyond rote interpretation into
integrated decision-making, examining how patient presentation, physiology, and subtle EKG findings
intersect. Each case exposes common cognitive traps, including overreliance on “classic” patterns and the
danger of treating the strip rather than the patient.

Attendees will learn to rapidly prioritize what matters, avoid high-risk errors, AKA the “clean kill”, and
translate findings into immediate action. Designed for prehospital providers and clinicians at all levels, this
session delivers practical, field-ready strategies to improve decision-making and patient outcomes when
seconds matter most.
