Gerad Troutman, MD, MBA, FACEP, FAEMS is the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Global Medical Response and medical director for the American Ambulance Association. He is an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, TX where he is the local EMS medical director and serves as a mentor to the Texas Tech Innovations Hub. He is a past president of the Texas College of Emergency Physicians and currently serves on the Texas Governor’s EMS & Trauma Advisory Council of Texas.

Beyond Response: EMS is the Front Door of American Healthcare

EMS has long been defined by lights, sirens, and rapid response. But in today’s healthcare landscape, EMS is increasingly serving as the front door to American healthcare — the first point of contact for millions of patients navigating urgent, chronic, and social health needs.

This session will explore how EMS is evolving from a reactive model to a proactive, integrated system that connects patients to the right care, at the right time, in the right place. We’ll examine the role of EMS in low‑acuity call management, community paramedicine, telehealth integration, and system efficiency. Attendees will leave with a clear vision of how EMS can redefine its identity as both a safety net and a healthcare access point in a changing world.
