Symptoms as Solutions: Welcoming and Integrating Disturbing patterns as Integral to Sustainable Change

A central currency in the therapeutic exchange is negative experiences--depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, etc. This practical and positive approach assumes that each core human experience has equivalent potential to be positive or negative, depending on the human relationship to it; and thus focuses on how problems may be transformed to resources by skillful human connection. This process operates at two levels:
(1) developing a generative state (in the therapist, client, and relationship field) and then
(2) using specific methods of transforming negative experiences and behaviors. Multiple techniques and examples for will be given, along with an exercise and demonstration.

Creative Transformation in Generative Psychotherapy - 2020

This demonstration will show how activating a client’s creative process is the key factor in generative psychotherapy. This process incorporates the following steps: opening a creative safe space; Identifying a goal ( positive change or transforming a negative pattern);
identifying and welcoming both obstacles and resources; weaving and integrating the parts into a new "mosaic of self"; and orienting to future application of changes.

Therapy is successful when clients are able to experientially realize positive life changes.

What Makes for Lasting Change?

It is not that difficult to produce change within a session, but a far greater challenge to ensure that these changes are lasting. In this conversation, Robert Dilts and Stephen Gilligan will each identify the key dimensions of sustainable change, then open a conversation about how to generatively apply them.

Integrating Dimensions of Cultural and Social Identities in the Psychotherapeutic Process

Cultural factors are present in all therapeutic relationships. Engaging the totality of individual clients by addressing their intersecting identities can promote self-affirmation and clarity about internalized oppression. The cultural competency paradigm and the Dimensions of Personal Identity model will serve as the primary reference points.

Symptoms as Solutions: Transforming Chronic Suffering into Positive Solution

Generative Psychotherapy sees a client’s negative states—depression, anxiety, addictions, negative habits-- as not-yet-valued attempts to satisfy core needs. The premise is that each core human experience—anger, vulnerability, not-knowing, playfulness--has equivalent potential to be positive or negative, depending on its human connections. Thus, a child’s anger becomes a negative symptom when met with hostile rejection, but a resource when engaged with skillful compassion.

This workshop will explore ways that this understanding can transform negative problems into positive resources. A general framework will be presented, illuminated by multiple techniques, mini-demos, case examples, and a guided process. A major emphasis will be on the underlying nonverbal presence needed to make all this work.

Conversational Connectedness Between the Two Mind/Brains: The key to mental health

Evolutionary consciousness has unfolded for eons via nonverbal “nature” intelligences, only recently joined in human consciousness by the verbal/virtual mind. This has produced both heavens and hells, depending on whether the two “brain/mind” intelligences are interconnected (eco-mind) or dissociated (isolated ego-mind). We will examine multiple research findings suggesting that dissociation between these two mind/brains is the common underlying condition for pervasive suffering, and how the restoration of positive interconnectedness can be skillfully done in psychotherapy and the larger community. Special attention will be given to recent neuroscience findings, accelerating trends of diagnostic disorders, and relevant clinical methods.
