Curtis Sandy, MD FACEP FAEMS is the US Chief Medical Officer for Falck and Medical Director for the Falck Health Institute, Falck Mobile Care and the Falck Physicians Group. He has a degree in EMS Management from The George Washington University and is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and EMS. He has over 40 years of EMS experience as an EMT, paramedic, paramedic instructor, flight physician, tactical physician and EMS medical director. He has consulted on many state EMS assessment for NHTSA. He works clinically in the emergency department at a regional referral center and serves on trauma, cardiac, stroke and resuscitation committees. He has been the State EMS Medical Director for Idaho for over 10 years. He has expertise in operational EMS including tactical medicine and wildland fire medical operations.

Connecting the Dots: Thinking Critically Under Pressure

The effectiveness of an EMS clinician depends greatly on the ability to formulate a differential diagnosis and provide diagnostic evaluation and appropriate treatment in a timely manner. This is referred to as clinical judgment and comes easier to some than others. This session will explore the function of the differential diagnosis as a foundation for paramedicine evaluation and treatment. Using standard questioning techniques, pattern recognition and their significance will be highlighted. Factors that influence differential development will be discussed and case studies highlighting common EMS calls and the differential diagnosis development will be used.
