Dr. Kupas is an EMS physician and emergency physician with Geisinger Health System in central Pennsylvania where he is medical director of mobile integrated healthcare and serves as EMS medical director for several agencies. He has served as the Commonwealth EMS Medical Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Health for over 20 years. Dr. Kupas started his career as an EMS provider 40 years ago as both a volunteer and employed paramedic . He is a paramedic who continues to do field response as an EMS physician. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications with clinical interests that include provider safety, patient safety, airway management, cardiac arrest quality, end-of-life care, wilderness EMS,and mass gathering EMS, and behavioral health emergencies.

Protective by Design: Enhancing EMS Safety Through Smarter Uniforms

EMS uniforms in the U.S. are seldom designed with safety in mind, and our traditions and culture make these even more unsafe. In Europe and Asia, EMS uniforms are generally safer and unique from other public safety responders. Uniform styles from other countries will be reviewed for safety and functionality The presentation will give examples of specific designs that are safer, improve ANSI/ OSHA compliance, and provide unique methods of identifying personnel in leadership positions. Understanding culture and personnel preferences is important in successful incorporation of safety and changes in uniform.
