Dan Cohen, MS, LPC-A, LP, recently retired after working with Williamson County EMS in central Texas for nearly 21 years where he served in the field and later as a Clinical Captain and administrator. His ongoing desire to improve the mental health of his peers has led to a new career. Dan now provides education and counseling services to first responders and healthcare providers through a research institution at UT Health Houston. Dan also serves the same cohort through TEEX (Texas A&M). He hopes the counseling work and EMS-specific research will enrich the lives of all first responders. He holds a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Mental Health The Way We See It: What Texas First Responders Said About Their Own Mental Health. . . Survey Says!

The University of Texas at Houston Health is studying EMS providers' mental health in a way few institutions are doing. The results of a 630-person questionnaire provided insights into mental health and substance use concerns amongst our peers. The scope of questions asked and the accurate breakdown by first responder occupation is uncommon in much of the available research. Though this is raw data, it could help individuals and leaders alike reassess their approaches to mental health concerns.
